University of Michigan Program - Wellness for Women with Polio - A Holistic Program

A health promotion curriculum was established for women with polio through the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Michigan. The health behavior component consisted of a series of four, three-hour classes on physical activity, stress management, and nutrition, all of which were related to the late effects of polio. Participants received individualized feedback in a session with class facilitators. During the sessions, wellness goals and issues of unique relevance to each participant with polio were discussed. The health education component was conducted by an individual with polio. Educational materials were compiled into an extensive manual that was distributed to each participant. While the program targeted individuals with polio, several sections of the manual could be easily adapted for persons with other physical disabilities.

The exercise module consisted of topics related to managing pain and fatigue in the affected muscle groups, appropriate rest intervals during exercise, and avoiding overuse injury. Home exercises were provided to each participant. The nutrition module consisted of various topics related to good nutrition and weight management. The stress management module emphasized various techniques to control stress related to the participants' condition.
