Programmatic Features

Vendors

The City of Reno has contracted with Tahoe Whitewater Tours (www.gowhitewater.com) to be the primary vendor for whitewater activities within the park. Part of the bid process requested potential vendors to provide a plan for program access for people with disabilities. Tahoe Whitewater Tours had extensive experience in adapted whitewater programming because of a previous relationship with the Far West Chapter of Disabled Sports/USA (www.dsusafw.org) and the Tahoe Adapted Ski School. Several staff with Tahoe Whitewater Tours had also volunteered with TASS and had experience with people with disabilities. Furthermore, Tahoe Whitewater Tours already had adapted equipment in its inventory.

Events

The Reno River Festival: Sponsored by the Reno/Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority, the Reno River Festival brings together the best paddling competitors in the world for a weekend of kayaking competitions and demos on the Truckee River in downtown Reno. Festival-goers will have more than just the chance to watch these kayakers compete. The Reno River Festival invites first-timers and even professionals to get in the water and test out the rapids with a full menu of classes and clinics led by local and regional paddling experts.

Clinics

Beginners can sign up for the Never Ever clinic, an introduction to whitewater kayaking that will focus on river safety, equipment requirements, paddling lingo, and basic skills needed to maneuver down the river. The only requirement for this class is a smile and enthusiasm. The Clinic for Mobility Impaired teaches adaptive kayaking skills for those with mobility impairments.
