Exercise Program for Stroke Survivors - Exercise Video and Quick Series Booklet

Exercise is important for everyone, including individuals who have had a stroke.

Exercise training programs for individuals with stroke should be aimed not only at increasing the level of physical fitness but also at reducing risk factors such as hypertension. A reduction of risk factors may contribute to the decrease in the incidence of secondary strokes. Participating in an aerobic conditioning program can alter several of the risk factors associated with the incidence of a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), including reduced hypertension, enhanced glucose regulation, improved blood lipid profile, and reduced body fat.

To further encourage stroke survivors to be physically active, the National Center on Health, Physical Activity, and Disability (NCHPAD) and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) have developed a new resource: "Exercise Program for Stroke Survivors". This exercise video is designed specifically for individuals recovering from stroke, and features:

  • A 25-minute aerobic segment, complete with a warm-up and a cool-down
  • A strengthening and flexibility segment
  • Closed captioning for individuals with hearing impairments

Please note that this video is not intended to be used in place of physical therapy or exercises prescribed by your doctor. It is intended to incorporate physical activity into your daily life.

This video is available in both DVD and VHS formats.
