Video Review: Fitness 1-2-3™ DVD Series: Low/Limited Mobility Muscular Training

Created by:
Sarah Massie-Johnson and led by fitness instructor Jennifer Howes

Chris Johnson and his wife Sarah, creators of Fitness 1-2-3™, have recently developed a 6-part video series aligned with the National Standards for Physical Fitness, the California Adaptive Physical Education Standards, and the Special Education Administrators of County Offices in California. These fun, interactive workouts for the home or classroom combine aerobics and strength training and are designed to be used in combination to improve core stability, balance, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular strength. The series includes the following videos as well as a demonstration DVD and instruction manual:

  • Low/Limited Mobility Muscular Training
  • Pull Movement/Muscular Training
  • Push Movement/Muscular Training
  • Balance/Core Training
  • Early Childhood Physical Activity
  • Fit-4-Testing

This month, we review the Low/Limited Mobility Muscular Training video and provide some clips from the video throughout. Stay tuned in upcoming newsletters for reviews of other videos in this series.

The Low/Limited Mobility Muscular Training video is designed especially for children or adults with physical or cognitive impairments and those who have restricted or limited mobility. It features a cardiovascular circuit that emphasizes upper- and lower-body muscular training and uses 10 separate stations for muscle building. The circuit utilizes easy-to-use adjustable resistance tubing and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

The exercises are demonstrated by two women, one in a chair with her feet up on a bench to protect the lower back, and one with partial paralysis, who is seated in a wheelchair. They perform the tubing exercises along with the assistance of an aide or instructor who guides the users through a series of exercises, beginning with a warm-up that incorporates large repetitive arm movements accompanied by easy-to-understand cues such as 'wash the window' or 'open the sliding glass door.' A nice feature of this DVD is that the menu is divided into the following chapters: Introduction, Warm-up, Chest Press, Chest Fly, Back Fly, Lat Pull Down, Shoulder Press, Tricep Extension, Hamstring Curl, Quadricep Extension, and Cool Down; you may select 'play all' or go straight to the specific section you desire.
