Health Vacations at Warm Springs

These diverse facilities suggest that the Roosevelt Institute in Warm Springs could be the perfect place to take a health vacation. It is not only beautiful and blessed with a Southern climate, but is also disability-friendly. The needed physical layout and medical specialty services at Warm Springs are already in place and would naturally lend themselves to the development of a health spa for people with disabilities, their friends and families.

How do we make the vision for health vacations at an American spa become a reality at Warm Springs? As a new dream for this historic warm-water resort emerges, the Institute's leadership would need to expand services to create comprehensive programs that would attract spa guests - both disabled and non-disabled. These would include a private transportation system to and from Atlanta, a new complementary medicine treatment program, and a more comprehensive nutritional program. The Institute's customer marketing focus would need to shift from serving patients to serving two-to-three-week guests, with a goal of creating healthful holidays for clientele with disabilities and their non-disabled companions who want to concentrate solely on their health and overall well being in an elegant, naturally beautiful and cheerful environment.

There are large numbers of people in America who are living longer and growing older with a long-held disability. As they age, they struggle to manage and alleviate new pain, weakness and fatigue; much the same as FDR (who likely had the late effects of polio) was doing as he regularly escaped to his dearly loved Warm Springs. Franklin Roosevelt knew, as our European neighbors know, that periodically vacationing at a health spa is a pleasant and prudent way to ward off the specter of greater disability - to refresh, rehabilitate and revitalize.
