The Jim Mullen Foundation New Freedom Awards Gala for People with Disabilities

On October 16, 1996, Chicago Police Officer Jim Mullen was serving his community and had a wife and 6-month-old daughter. A bullet to the face ended his career, and paralyzed Jim from the neck down.

Jim's faith and determination and the love and support of his family and a multitude of friends enabled him to survive and adapt to his physical limitations. Jim discovered "new freedoms" through the use of computers using voice-recognition software. In 1998, he started the Jim Mullen Foundation as a way to provide "new freedoms" to others. With the help of corporate donors and volunteers, he has distributed hundreds of free computers with adaptive/assistive technology in the Foundation's Computer Give-A-Way Program. Soon he will become a regular contributor to WBBM-Channel 2 newscasts. Read Jim's story at http://www.ncpad.org/665/2792/2003-07-01.
