The second conference sponsored by the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "Navigating Our Future: Aligning Strategies and Science," was held July 26-28 in Washington, DC. Themes included promoting early identification of genetic and developmental conditions, preventing birth defects and developmental disabilities, promoting health and well-being and reducing secondary conditions among persons with disabilities, and translating knowledge about prevention to public health policy and programs http://www.ncpad.org/680/2985/2004-07-22#1.

During the conference, NCBDDD, CDC presented NCHPAD with the first Best Effective Practices Award, which recognizes individuals or organizations that make significant contributions to public health practice at the community, state, and national levels through the effective use of data and technology.
