Recreation Assistant - Coach, City of Mesa, Mesa, Arizona, Jan-April 2008

The City of Mesa currently has rewarding opportunities for Recreation Assistant - Coach and Volunteers to assist in the Adaptive Sport Program serving those with permanent physical disabilities. The inspirational athletes will include individuals with amputations, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, visual impairments or various other physical disabilities.

We are currently recruiting coaches for track, field and archery. The program meets on Saturday mornings at Mesa High School from January through April. An educational Paralympic Academy and Disability Sports Expo Day on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27th at ASU would be a beneficial training to attend.

Camp Director, Camp Hope Illinois, Fall or Winter, 2007

Camp Hope is a five-day recreational and residential summer camp in the Chicago area for children, teenagers, and young adults who are challenged by developmental disabilities. This is a year-round, part-time position providing a rewarding opportunity for someone actively involved in social work, education or other social services directly relating to the developmentally disabled. Together with the Board of Directors, the Camp Director helps prepare for and oversee two sessions of Camp Hope summer camp. This is primarily a summer job, although there are administrative responsibilities throughout the year.

Prevention Specialist - Built Environment (Physical Activity and Nutrition team) Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, WA

The Prevention Business Unit is seeking to fill one Regular, Full-time Prevention Specialist position. Under the general direction of a manager, the Prevention Specialist will: Develop and implement programs, projects and processes designed to increase physical activity among selected Pierce County populations.; work with land use and transportation planners, city and county officials, non-motorized transportation advocates, school officials, parks representatives and other community stakeholders to increase the opportunities for walking, bicycling and other forms of physical activity as well as enhancements to the built environment that improve access to healthy foods; develop and implement programs to promote the increased use of existing opportunities for physical activity; lead, facilitate and provide technical assistance to complex, politically-sensitive multi-stakeholder planning and decision making processes that influence the built environment; participate as a member of the Physical Activity and Nutrition Team, whose overarching goal is the prevention of obesity.

Qualifications: Master's Degree in Public Health, Planning, Education, Communications, Social Marketing or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, and two years of relevant professional-level experience which adequately illustrates the attainment of knowledge, skills, abilities and other requirements of the job listed. For this position, familiarity with land use planning, transportation planning, urban or community development is highly desirable. Comfort with complex community decision-making processes is also highly desirable. Salary Range: $49,441 - $63,294 /Annually.

Postdoctoral Fellows, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Position 1: Epidemiologic studies of obesity and physical activity
Candidates will have interest in population-based studies of obesity, body composition and/or physical activity and excellent SAS data analysis skills. Training in epidemiology, biostatistics, exercise science and nutrition or other health-related sciences is preferred. Experiences will include data analysis, manuscript preparation and involvement in writing grant proposals.

Position 2: Studies of obesity prevention in children
Candidates will have interest in the development and advancement of methods used in obesity prevention studies aimed at children. Training in nutrition and clinical trials preferred. Areas of work are likely to include diet, physical activity and other obesity-related behaviors.

Applicants should be interested in both data collection and analysis, and have some experience in the design and implementation of trials. Experiences will include data analysis, manuscript preparation and involvement in writing grant proposals. Participation in classroom courses as a student and/or instructor is also available. Fellows will have opportunities to participate in classroom courses as a student and/or instructor is also available. United States citizenship is not required, however, candidates must speak and write English fluently.

Assistant/Associate (Tenure Track) in Obesity Prevention and Control, Department of Health and Human Performance, University of Houston, Houston, Texas

The Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Houston is seeking a health specialist with demonstrable research skills in the area of obesity studies. The position is a nine-month appointment with summer school teaching optional.

Required: Earned doctorate in physiology, epidemiology, nutrition or psychology with an established record of investigating facets of obesity and associated health problems; demonstrated ability to conduct and publish high quality research; demonstrated potential to engage in collaborative research projects with medical and governmental agencies located in Houston; a record of externally funded research; graduate and undergraduate teaching and student mentorship. Duties will include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in health, nutrition, epidemiology, physical activity and/or physiology; training graduate students in area of specialization with an emphasis on obesity issues; develop and maintain a rigorous and externally funded scholarly research program; perform service to the department, college, university and the profession; and contribute to the development of the recently established Obesity Research Center.

Tenure-Track Position, Assistant Professor, Penn State University

The Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Management (RPTM), College of Health and Human Development (HHD), at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor to begin fall 2008. We hold a broad view of both leisure and health and encourage applications from individuals with social or physical science backgrounds who hold strong interest in and conduct research related to health or physical activity in the leisure context, as well as individuals in recreation, park, and tourism management. The successful candidate will be expected to continue or develop a funded, focused line of research; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; supervise undergraduate and graduate student research (M.S. & Ph.D.); and provide service to the Department, College, and University. All qualified applicants will be considered, however, we are especially interested in applicants who will contribute disciplinary expertise to the teaching, research, and service scholarship of the department.
