Starting in April, we will launch a new column entitled 'Weight Smart', which will focus on weight management and behavioral strategies to help you control or lose weight. With over 68% of U.S. adults considered overweight (defined as having a body mass index [BMI] greater than 25 kg/m2) and 33% considered obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), weight management has been an increasingly popular topic, not only for adults but also for children. Approximately 32% of U.S. children and adolescents are considered overweight or obese, which has even sparked President Obama and the First Lady, Michelle Obama to establish a task force on childhood obesity and start the initiative 'Let's Move' in February. Overweight and obesity has been shown to be associated with higher rates of mortality, as well as numerous chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and certain cancers. With strong evidence linking excess body weight to several chronic diseases, it is important to discuss and find ways to manage your weight to lower your risk of developing these conditions.

This column will review current research findings and hot topics in the media regarding weight loss or weight management. In addition, information on weight control, behavioral strategies, and helpful tricks to manage your weight will be discussed. Furthermore, we know many of you may have struggled with your weight in the past or are currently struggling and we would love to hear your story. We know controlling your weight is not easy. However, it is possible, and this column will aim to help you make steps to achieve or maintain your goal.
