Osteoporosis is a major cause of disability in both older men and women. Worldwide, it is estimated that osteoporosis affects at least 75 million people, and according to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, 1 in 3 women over 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures, as will 1 in 5 men. Osteoporosis, meaning "porous bone," is a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle, often leading to fractures, with the most susceptible sites including the spine, hip, and wrist. Aside from people who have osteoporosis, many others have low bone density, putting them at risk for developing this condition.
