Description
  • Adaptive Sports Northwest's (ASNW) mission is to provide and promote recreational, fitness and competitive opportunities for people with physical disabilities. It is our vision to lead our community to a greater state of health and wellness by nurturing the mind, body and spirit through sports and recreation. We are a nonprofit organization, founded in 1982. ASNW provides equipment, coaching and accessible facilities in support of a total of nine individual and team sports that engage adults and youth with physical disabilities: wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, power soccer, sitting volleyball, handcycling, adaptive swimming, adaptive kayaking, goalball, and track and field. ASNW athletes and their families reside in more than 50 communities throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington state, within a 200-mile radius of Portland. Guest athletes from California, Idaho, Seattle, Spokane and British Columbia travel to the Portland area to participate in wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby tournaments organized by ASNW staff and volunteers. We are experts in providing adaptive sports for people with a range of experiences and sports expertise. ASNW athletes range in age from 6 to 75. Athletes who participate in our sports programs experience physical disabilities including impaired muscle power (e.g. paraplegia and quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome, spina bifida), impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency (e.g. amputation or dysmelia), leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment. Athletes also have a range of sports experience when they join our programs - from novice to world-class award winners. ASNW serves people regardless of race, ethnic background, sexual orientation and income. ASNW services currently include facility access, coaching, tournament support and adaptive equipment for a total of nine adaptive sports that have been modified for the athlete with a physical disability. An experienced Sports & Recreation Program Manager coordinates sports for adults and youth with the help of trained, volunteer coaches.
