General Description
Agate Fossil Beds National Monument protects the Miocene age mammal excavation sites that were found here and excavated in the early 1900''s. Also the National Park Service preserves and protects a collection of American Indian artifacts that were gifts to the rancher James Cook. Many of these items were gifts from Red Cloud and the Oglala Lakota Sioux. There is a visitor center with exhibits about the two subjects and a 12 minute movie about the fossil story here. There are also two walking trails, the Fossil Hills trail which is 2.7 miles round trip that visits the historic excavation sites and the Daemonelix trail which is one mile round trip and visits two exhibit cases of the Daemonelix burrows.
