Updates and Upcoming Events

By: Bob Lujano

This month at NCHPAD we’re focusing on building healthy hearts by striving to stay active each of the 28 days of February. We’d LOVE for you to do the same. Here are a few easy ways to get on board. Look for organizations and programs that are in your neighborhood in which you can participate that specifically exercise your heart. Search for programs to participate in doing exercises and activities every morning, such as #habit4health21. Find exercise classes or boot camps in your community. Even if you’re reading this and it’s halfway through the month, you can still begin with today.

Remember, the American Heart Association wants you to do a 30-minute cardiovascular workout every day. Any cardiovascular workout is important and beneficial for your heart. However, with our obesity rates climbing to national crisis heights, we need to go that extra mile. Strive to train for that 5K, 10K, or half-marathon. Ramp up your cycling, CrossFit, or weight-training workouts. There are so many activities that can lead to increased cardiovascular activities.

Check out these websites to get your heart moving:

New Guidance on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973:  What Does This all Mean?

With over 55 million Americans with disabilities in our nation – many of whom are children or youth – the new guidance by the Office of Civil Rights has brought attention to the benefits this will have for all people with disabilities. So, how does this affect you?

  • Clarifies schools’ responsibilities under Section 504 to provide athletic opportunities for students with disabilities.
  • Ensures that schools look broadly and strive proactively to include students with disabilities in athletic programs.
  • Highlights the civil rights obligation to provide equal educational opportunities.
  • Opens the door for the vast expansion of opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in sports and physical activity programs in all levels of education, including both interscholastic and intercollege athletic opportunities.

We’d like to hear back from you about this exciting news.

  • What does this all mean to you?
  • Please offer any discussion about what has worked in your community to enhance sports opportunities.
  • What are the barriers?
  • What has been successful?
  • Would you like your responses to be anonymous or can we highlight your information?
