The Arthritis Foundation's updated publication, Walk With Ease: Your Guide to Walking for Better Health, Improved Fitness and Less Pain, is an excellent guide for designing a safe and effective walking exercise plan while managing arthritis symptoms.
The first chapter begins with basic information on arthritis and exercise, as well as arthritis-related and other disorders, i.e., fibromyalgia and osteoporosis. The second chapter covers necessary information on beginning a walking program, including walking equipment (i.e., shoes, socks, clothes); the "FIT" concept (frequency, intensity, and time duration); and developing a walking plan, comprising a personal walking contract, a walking diary, self tests, and measurements, as well as rewards.
Other chapters cover implementing a five-step walking pattern, comfort and safety tips, solutions to common problems, and motivation issues. Moreover, the guide includes exceptional chapters on managing pain and monitoring exercise programs safely (i.e., the perceived exertion scale, taking a pulse, and measuring fitness levels).
Each chapter ends with a Self Check, to ensure that the reader has understood the main points, as well as inspirational reminders to make progress with the program. The guide concludes with resources and an appendix of exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles.
