SCAMP Camp is a residential summer camp for kids with moderate to severe asthma, ages 8-13, who live in San Diego or Imperial Counties. At SCAMP Camp, kids are able to enjoy all the activities expected of a summer camp, without having to feel different because of their asthma. Parents can relax, too, knowing their child is receiving expert medical care. The camp facility used is the YMCA Camp Marston, located in the mountains near Julian. The American Lung Association has sponsored successful SCAMP Camp sessions every year since 1977.
Camp staff includes trained counselors and activities specialists to supervise such activities as swimming, archery, nature, hiking, picnics, arts and crafts, skits and fishing. Education is a part of SCAMP Camp, too. Campers will learn more about their asthma and ways to help manage it. An experienced, volunteer medical staff is available 24 hours a day, including doctors specializing in asthma and allergy, registered nurses and respiratory therapists. Asthma medications, including nebulizer treatments if needed, are given out as part of the regular camp program. Care is also taken to ensure campers receive non-allergic diets as needed.
