The most obvious and best reason to camp is to have fun! Camp Barclay, a committee of Camp Fitch, was established in 1977, and maintained as a camp for children with diabetes. It has provided children with diabetes an opportunity to have fun in a safe environment under the supervision of a team of diabetes specialists.
Camp Fitch, a Y camp, sponsored by the Youngstown YMCA provides this wonderful opportunity for your child. Swimming, sailing, water skiing, crafts, archery, hiking, riflery, nature, games and horseback riding are just some of the activities that your child can participate in while at camp. Each child sleeps in in a "cabent" (cabin/tent) with seven other children and a counselor. The meals are served in the dining hall with assistance from a registered dietitian with expertise in diabetes. Each day the children are invited to an afternoon education session where topics such as nutrition and other diabetes facts are discussed in a game format.
A staff of one doctor and two nurses and a dietitian will live at the campsite during the diabetic camp.
