Shake-A-Leg operates camps for fifteen to twenty children with disabilities, ages seven to fourteen during the summer months. During the week-long programs, youth participate in recreational and art and craft activities designed to meet their needs and abilities. They also sail on the Shake-A-Leg Freedom 20 sailboats, which are adapted to be sailed by individuals with disabilities.
This program fills a void as there are no summer programs for children with disabilities in this region. It is also unique in that the program is run by adults with disabilities, who are wonderful role models. With this program, Shake-A-Leg endeavors to provide an environment that allows for developing mentors, making friends, having fun and building confidence -- all at the same time.
