Long before the therapeutic recreation department at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in 1997, the hospital staff have been involved in helping provide a camp experience for many of its patients.
The hospital regularly provides staff to help plan and facilitate several camps over the spring and summer months. Camps for children with muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, arthritis, hand disorders, arthrogryposis, and amputations have become regular events that patients look foward to every year.
Besides camps, TSRHC has for over 20 years taken 14 adolescents with amputations to Winter Park, Colorado each February for a week of ski school and fun on the slopes.
Whether at camp or on the slopes, patients experience the challenges and joys of being involved in adapted sports and recreation activities.
