Method

A randomized clinical trial was employed, with participants randomized into intervention and control groups. Data was collected from all participants at three time points (baseline; 2 weeks after the intervention; 4 months later). The measures used include: biometric tests (fasting blood draw for total cholesterol; arm ergometry testing for endurance; neurological examination, and Body Mass Index). The survey questionnaires administered include: Wellness survey; Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II, to assess personal health promotion habits and obtain scores on health responsibility, nutrition, stress management, and physical activity; Secondary Conditions Scale; Self-rated abilities for Health Practice Scale (SAHP), to assess the perception of one's ability to maintain a health lifestyle; Perceived Stress Scale; Physical Activities with Disability (PADS) Questionnaire to measure current physical activity and exercise behaviors, exercise activity, leisure activity, and household activity.

The intervention referred to as "Well on Wheels!" consisted of six 4-hour workshop sessions at the university hospital (University of Michigan). The four modules that comprised the intervention workshop sessions were: (1) lifestyle management, (2) physical activity, (3) nutrition, and (4) preventing secondary conditions. Participants in the intervention group were also involved in individual coaching sessions with each of the three module teachers and two follow-up phone calls by the project managers, held over a 3-month period Theoretical concepts for developing the program were adapted from the model of quality of life in persons with disabling conditions by Stuifbergen, et al. Statistical analyses employed included preliminary descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and multiple regression models. SAS software was used for the analyses.
