NCHPAD RESOURCES

New NCHPAD Databases!
NCHPAD has added two new databases. The personal trainer’s database lists personal trainers throughout the U.S. for people with disabilities or chronic health conditions. Go to http://www.ncpad.org/directories/19/Personal~Trainers to find a trainer in your area, or to be added to this national database if you are a trainer who works with people with disabilities. Contact Cheeri Ong at cheeri@uic.edu if you have any questions regarding the survey or the database.

Log on to NCPAD's online accessible parks database at http://www.ncpad.org/directories/18/Parks to find a park in your area. Park administrators and/or accessibility coordinators can also add their park-related information to this national database by accessing the same link.

Camp Resources
In preparation for choosing a summer camp, see the NCHPAD Camps Resources factsheet (http://www.ncpad.org/78/597/Camp~Resources), as well as the Discover Camp Booklet, which answers many commonly-asked questions that parents ask when sending their child who has a disability to camp. PARALYMPICS INFORMATION

Paralympics Webcast Coverage
The International Paralympic Committee has launched a global broadband webcast for the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, March 10-19, 2006 in Torino, Italy, which is a state-of-the-art high quality 24/7 television channel broadcast over the Internet (split or full screen). Viewers worldwide will be able to watch live and delayed programming or access coverage on demand. www.paralympicsport.tv

Raising the Bar: New Horizons in Disability Sport
A new photography exhibit highlighting athletes with disabilities, based on the book, Raising the Bar: New Horizons in Disability Sport, is now featured at the Global Communications Center at the Roybal Campus (http://www.cdc.gov/gcc/exhibit/), with support from the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities.

This groundbreaking exhibit features the works of 10 award-winning photographers and 30 international athletes from the para-athletic community. The exhibit is an intimate, visually vivid portrayal of the international para-athletic community. More than any other public sports event, para-athletics challenge us to think about athleticism in new ways, and individuals with disabilities are creating new frontiers for human achievements despite their disabilities.

No Excuses
NO EXCUSES (www.noexcusesmovie.com) chronicles the 2002 U.S. Disabled Ski Team World Cup season over 3 months and two continents culminating in Salt Lake City at the Paralympic Games. The film captures individual struggles of the athletes as they endeavor to meet the challenges of their sport and their disabilities without the sentiment and pity common in coverage of those with disabilities.

Sports for Life Needs Racing or Sport Chairs
Sports for Life (http://www.vvaf.org/programs/sports/) currently has programs running in Angola, Vietnam, and Cambodia, with one planned in Ethiopia, and needs racing or sports chairs (basketball, tennis) for novice athletes. National Nutrition Month: Celebrate National Nutrition Month and learn to nourish your body with good foods! Go to the American Dietetic Association’s website (www.eatright.org) for a myriad of good suggestions, and access NCPAD’s nutrition pages (http://www.ncpad.org/nutrition/) for good ideas on nutritious eating for a specific disability.
