Maya Chakar was born in Lebanon with a congenital malformation. As a child, she enjoyed activities such as running, biking, swimming, walking, climbing, and dancing, but at age 12, she had back surgery to remove a lipoma from her lower back and never recovered full sensation or mobility afterwards. At this point, her life changed radically, as she learned to walk with crutches and braces. She admits that it was only with the love and support of her entire family -- particularly her mother -- that she was able to adapt.
