  • Dr. James Rimmer, Director of NCPAD, recently was invited to present at the Institute of Medicine Workshop on the Adequacy of Evidence for Physical Activity Guidelines Development. Invited participants were asked to consider the available evidence related to physical activity and the general population, including persons with disabilities, older adults, pregnant and post-partum women, and persons of different age groups.
  • The U.S. Access Board, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), has developed a new training course on its ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and ABA (Architectural Barriers Act) accessibility guidelines for play areas. These guidelines cover access to play components, including elevated structures, surfacing, and other elements of play areas. The 3-hour course will be used to train park and recreation professionals, designers, landscape architects, manufacturers, operators, and others concerned with ensuring access to play areas.   • Explorations Unlimited LLC (http://www.explorationsunlimited.biz/) provides products to facilitate inclusion of children with developmental delays in typical community activities, which include posters, photos, and lesson plans.
  • A new guide published by the National Center on Educational Outcomes, "What Parents of Students with Disabilities Need to Know and Do," provides information on two of the nation's most important federal laws relating to the education of children: The No Child Left Behind Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.   • The National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPERID) has developed an on-line directory of adapted physical education/activity professional preparation programs (http://www.uwlax.edu/sah). If you currently work in the field, go to http://www.uwlax.edu/sah to complete the brief on-line adapted physical education/activity professional preparation program survey to keep databases updated.   • The Arthritis Foundation has produced an upbeat 60-minute fitness DVD which provides a balanced exercise routine, and is based on the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, a proven method for improved fitness.
