From the Editor's Desk: Healthy Together for the Holidays

Family RunWhen we think of the holidays, our minds easily drift to consuming a table full of delicious seasonal dishes, gathering around the fire as It’s A Wonderful Life plays in the background, and wrapping then unwrapping mounds of gifts. But what if our holidays could also be about engaging the entire family in fitness?

A couple years ago, my family woke up on Christmas morning and BEFORE opening the presents or cooking breakfast, we went for a jog around the block. Though we began at the same time, we all eventually found our individual paces and met back at the house with rosy cheeks and energized bodies. We still enjoyed the usual holiday traditions and treats, but we felt better indulging in an extra helping of sweet potato casserole knowing that we’d burned extra calories that morning.

What if we all seek opportunities to add fitness with our families and friends this holiday season? Here are some tips to get us started:

  • Check local races (most are now accessible) and select one that allows all to participate
  • Attend an adaptive yoga class together
  • Go Christmas tree shopping and walk or roll around the tree farm as you select the perfect one
  • Create your own family workout session providing adaptations with each exercise
  • Go caroling on your street or around your neighborhood; walk or roll instead of driving from house to house

Share your own Healthy Together for the Holidays experiences and/or ideas, and you could win a prize! Winner will be announced Wednesday, December 12th.

Whatever activity you choose, enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you’re spending quality family time together while taking care of your health.

Our November NCHPAD News has a great deal to offer in regards to your health and wellness this month. Gather advice on designing a healthier plate in our Nutrition Spotlight; take care of your holiday shopping list with Kelly Bonner’s Gadget Season; be challenged by Dr. Rimmer’s Director’s Column on the continued need to bridge the gap from rehab to physical activity and much more!

Wherever you are on your road to health and fitness, we at NCHPAD wish you the very best during this holiday season!

Blessings,

Laura K. Womble
