From the Information Specialist's Desk

  1. The holidays are here again! Manage holiday stress and calories by moving more this season. Avoid holiday weight gain by exercising earlier in the day to boost metabolism, eating your largest meal at midday, and ingesting smaller portions.

NCHPAD is in the process of developing Web-based video clip resources. Access the new NCHPAD video clip on strengthening exercises as well as stretching exercises at http://www.ncpad.org/content/61/Video!

Chicago residents can attend Mayor Daley's Holiday Sports Festival, December 27-29. This all-ages sports festival includes both tournaments and interactive zones. Pre-registered teams compete in tournaments for basketball, volleyball and others, and interactive zones include wall climbing, football, golf, skateboarding and much more.

    Saturday, December 27 - Monday, December 29, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
McCormick Place, Lakeside Center and Hall A
2301 S. Lake Shore Dr., Chicago, IL 60616

  2. Depending on your locale, winter holidays are also related to inclement weather, including slippery ice and snow. As Michael Rogers cites in his new monograph (http://www.ncpad.org/121/938/First~Steps~to~Active~Health~~Balance~and~Flexibility~
    Exercises~for~Older~Adults
), one-third of community-residing adults over 65 years of age suffer a fall each year (Tinetti et al., 1988). Improving balance and strength is essential to facing these conditions and avoiding dangerous falls. Consult this helpful new monograph as well as contact NCHPAD at 800-900-8086 to learn how to develop such a program.
  3. December 1st was World Aids Day. Get involved at http://www.ncpad.org/660/2707/2003-12-01. Also, see the NCHPAD monographs at http://www.ncpad.org/50/381/Promoting~Health~of~People~with~HIV~AIDS on treatment adherence for persons with HIV/AIDS and http://www.ncpad.org/159/1197/Benefits~of~Exercise~for~People~with~HIV~AIDS on the benefits of exercise for persons with HIV/AIDS.
  4. The North Dakota Center for People with Disabilities is developing an online interactive fitness program for people with developmental disabilities. See their introductory presentation at http://www.ncpad.org/660/2707/2003-12-01.
  5. $$Call for writers!! NCHPAD needs factsheets on the disability areas of ADHD, chronic heart failure, cerebral palsy, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. If you or someone you can recommend is an expert in any one of these areas, and would be interested in writing a short factsheet on any of these topics, please contact Jennifer Gray at jegray@uic.edu.
  6. A special thanks to everyone who completed the NCHPAD Accessible Programs Database! We have entered all your programs/organizations information into our database. This new and/or updated information will be available online at (http://www.ncpad.org/directories/15/Programs) in January 2004.

For those who are interested in sharing your program information with us, request a copy to be sent to you by contacting Cheeri Ong at cheeri@uic.edu or 800-900-8086.
