Lakeshore Foundation: Great Fitness Programming for People with Disabilities

The Lakeshore Foundation, of Birmingham, Alabama, raises, manages and distributes funds and other resources to actively support activities, programs or projects that encourage the independence of individuals who have experienced physical disabilities through enhancement of their lifestyles and participation in the life of their community. It currently serves more than 3,400 people annually who have experienced physically disabling conditions such as spinal cord or head injury, stroke, amputation, cerebral palsy, post-polio, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, and who have sustained injuries through accidents or from acts of violence.

A wide variety of programs include aquatics for fibromyalgia, Parkinson's, and arthritis, along with various types of fitness programs; outdoor adventures; a tennis program; and athletics. It works collaboratively with other disability organizations statewide, including the Alabama Head Injury Foundation, UCP, MS Society and the Arthritis Foundation. Programs are available to anyone who lives in Alabama.
