USDHHS Report: Physical Activity Fundamental to Preventing Disease

The June 2002 report by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation begins with statistics on the prevalence of chronic disease in the US, as well as the economic costs of treating these chronic conditions (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis).

It reviews the correlation between physical activity and physical health and mental health. As obesity is an increasing problem, the remainder of the report centers on the epidemic of obesity and how physical activity and a nutritious diet may help to maintain an ideal weight.

Good recommendations for initiating physical activity within the communities and a complete reference list end the report.
