NCHPAD Book Corner: Foundations of Therapeutic Recreation

Foundations of Therapeutic Recreation: Perceptions, philosophies, and practices for the 21st century
Terry Robertson & Terry Long, ed. (2008)
Human Kinetics, Champaign, IL

The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to the profession of Therapeutic Recreation. The book is divided into three parts; Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation (topics include career choice and professional opportunities, definition and history of therapeutic recreation, person-first-philosophy); Potential Areas of Practice (includes overall process, specific areas of application, orthopedic and neurological impairment, mental health, developmental disabilities, youth development, and aging). Theoretical concepts and specific techniques and modalities are also discussed. Part three consider current trends and the mechanisms for engaging and addressing associated demands (global perspectives, navigating the political process, and professional paradoxes associated with therapeutic recreation). Additionally, an entire chapter is devoted to wellness through physical activity (chapter 13), co-authored by NCHPAD Information Specialist Sheila Swann-Guerrero. This is the first introductory therapeutic recreation textbook written entirely within this century, and with collaboration from both new and seasoned professionals within the field, this textbook shares tested and successful interventions and may also push new barriers and challenge the status quo.
