From the Editor's Desk: Access to Wheelchairs

Did you know that people who use wheelchairs often don't get the "right" wheelchair that fits their needs? The cause is often due to insurance companies. People with disabilities are restricted to the wrong mobility equipment, and are forced to receive policy plans that don't meet their needs. Also, some reimbursement policies limit medical equipment suppliers from offering equipment choice and service.

UsersFirst is an organization that is aware of this problem and has made it its mission to help wheelchair users get appropriate equipment. UsersFirst is a consumer organization that rejects the one-size-fits-all perception of mobility equipment. It believes that the right wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and seating systems are fundamental elements in maintaining the health, quality of life, and independence of people with disabilities.

Its mission is to advocate for greater access to appropriate wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and seating systems for people with disabilities. UsersFirst fights for people with disabilities to have access to mobility equipment that's right for them, so they can live the lives they choose.
