From the Information Specialist's Desk: Updates and Upcoming Events

By Luke Hanson

November has gone by at a whirlwind pace for those of us here at NCHPAD, and we are still recovering from all of our October travels! The NCHPAD staff has had the incredible pleasure of participating in two phenomenal events. From October 11th through the 13th, we attended the North American Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (NAFAPA) conference here in Birmingham, AL, hosted by Lakeshore Foundation. Over the course of the three-day event, we learned from expert speakers and presenters who updated us on the current state of all things related to adapted physical activity. Right on the heels of NAFAPA, the NCHPAD team hit the road (or air) again to attend the 140th American Public Health Association (APHA) annual conference in San Francisco, CA. From October 27th to the 31st, we were updated on the current states of public health and the disability movement. We also spent many hours in the exhibit hall with thousands of other conference attendees spreading the word about NCHPAD.

Getting out and advocating for our organization and the people we serve, along with staying up-to-date on disability and health issues is one of our favorite parts about being members of the NCHPAD team. It helps us meet and better serve you, and we could not be more grateful for the opportunity. On that note, here are a few tidbits to check out this month.
Remember, for any of your disability, physical activity and health resource needs, we are always only one phone call (1-800-900-8086) or email (email@nchpad.org) away!

Awareness

November has been designated as an awareness month for numerous diseases and health conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, and both lung and pancreatic cancer. The following NCHPAD resources can provide you with more information on these health conditions, as well as some physical activity and nutrition guidelines to consider for yourself or someone else at risk.
