Peer Tutor Training Program
Experts believe that training tutors is essential to the success of the program (Houston-Wilson, Dunn, et al. 1997; Lieberman, Dunn et al. 2000). The peer tutor training program can take one hour or more, depending on the age of the tutor, the child's disability, and the units of instruction. For example, if a hearing child is in a reciprocal peer tutoring program with a deaf child, he or she will need to go through the basic training program with additional time spent learning important signs. If a student is in a unidirectional peer tutor program, tutoring a student with autism during a dance unit, then the tutor will first need to understand the dance steps before attempting to teach them to the student with autism. In this case, the tutor would require more time in training. Setting up peer tutor training programs is not difficult. The following are simple steps that aid in the development and implementation of a peer tutor program.
