Video Review: Life After SCI

Mark Schmitt, who understands first-hand what life is like after a spinal cord injury, guides you through the day-to-day routines of life in a wheelchair, i.e., boarding airplanes, securing rental cars, finding the right off-road mountain bike or three-wheeler, playing softball, and attending college. Along with these topics, Schmitt conducts motivational interviews with individuals who have spinal cord injuries, and underscores the importance of physical activity (particularly leg motion) for people with disabilities, and standing for wheelchair users.

Mark Schmitt guides you on his journey as he travels to Durango, Colorado, and participates in an outdoor challenge program sponsored by the Adaptive Sports Center. Here he demonstrates off-road mountain biking and handcycling in his mountainous habitat. He interviews athletes with the National Wheelchair Softball Organization who illustrate how the game of wheelchair softball is played. His journey concludes at Southwest State University in Minnesota (fully-accessible campus), where he shows what college life is like for a wheelchair user.
