The built environment encompasses all the buildings, spaces, and products created or modified by people. Examples include: buildings (housing, schools, workplaces); land use (industrial or residential); public resources (parks, museums); zoning regulations; and transportation systems.

Professionals, including academics, government representatives, advocacy and public health organizations, community and business leaders, policy makers, and health practitioners, are invited to attend.

  13. Physical Activity Policy in Action National Conference

America faces a national health crisis of epidemic proportions: Physical inactivity combined with overeating has in less than 30 years made the United States a nation of overweight and out-of-shape individuals. Clearly, something must be done to turn the tide on this epidemic.

The federal government and many state governments have begun to address the problem legislatively by instituting policies that encourage individuals to be more physically active. As communities have risen to the challenge by enacting laws to combat the growing obesity epidemic, more information is needed to determine if enacted policies have adequately addressed the problem. The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity is hosting this conference in Washington, D.C., on June 9, to investigate the issue.

E-mail sfranklin@ncppa.org to be added to a mailing list for a conference brochure or check the NCPPA Web site at http://www.ncppa.org/ for registration information.
