Shake It Up Program Seeks Participants!

Shake It Up is a program that will provide individualized and self-directed support in the areas of physical activity, recreation, life skills, and health promotion. The project intends to motivate positive life changes and build the capacities of individuals with SCI through the development of peer support networks and self-advocacy.

The project is looking for adult participants (18 years and older) who have experienced a spinal cord injury or other neuromuscular disorder (i.e., multiple sclerosis) within the past five years. Shake It Up is a 5 month long program beginning in August, 2002. Two Saturdays each month, participants will go to Brown University and take part in interesting seminars about independent living, healthy lifestyles, and becoming a self-advocate. During the afternoon, participants will take part in a variety of recreational activities, including sailing, sea kayaking, hand cycling, stunt kite flying, wheelchair sports, and strength and fitness training.

Shake It Up is a collaborative effort between Brown University, PARI Center for Independent Living, and Shake-A-Leg. The main goal of the program is empowerment and improved quality of life. Participants in this program will have the chance to try new sports in a safe way, meet new people who are dealing with disabilities, and have the opportunity to become stronger and more physically fit. Best of all: IT'S FREE! To learn more about the program, call Pamela Block or Sarah Everhart Skeels at 401-44 4-1879, or email them at shakeitup@brown.edu!
