Community Voice: A Circuit-Training Program for People with Visual Impairments

Curves® offers a 30-minute circuit-training fitness program designed to provide a cardiovascular and strength-training workout using hydraulic resistance and a women-centered design. Members are able to transfer quickly between machines without having to make adjustments to weight and positioning. The theory behind the Curves® design is that because machines are strategically placed in the circuit, members do not have to worry about overworking a muscle or missing a muscle group during the workout. The upper, middle, and lower muscle groups are all addressed in the circuit and a final component of stretching is also performed, all of it taking just 30 minutes. Ashley Pennock, a former student in Disability and Human Development at UIC and Fitness Technician at Curves®, works with two women with visual impairments that inspired her to share their stories of success through this program.
