NADD 26th Annual Conference & Exhibit Show - Advancing Mental Wellness Through Excellence in Mental Health Care in Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, October 21-23, 2009, New Orleans, LA

Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs Peer Review Opportunity

Congress has made available $35 million for fiscal year 2009 to fund innovative research that has the potential to make a significant impact on improving function, wellness, and overall quality of life for persons living with spinal cord injuries. They are currently recruiting persons who are living with spinal cord injuries and/or their family members/caregivers to serve as consumer/advocate reviewers in peer reviews of proposals submitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) of the DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Calling All Group Exercise Instructors!

Club Industry 2009 includes a feature on the show floor called Club Studio, where group exercise classes are given throughout the day in 30-minute time slots. Club Studio runs during the expo days only: Thursday, October 15, from 1 pm to 5:30 pm; Friday, October 16, from 12 pm to 3 pm and Saturday, October 17, from 10:30 am to 1 pm. These are straight classes as if you were in a club - no lecture, no breakdown of the exercise. Club Industry still has time slots available, so if anyone is interested in - or knows someone who may be interested in - conducting a class, please contact the individuals listed below.

Veterans Adaptive Activities Day, October 9, 2009, Chicago, IL

Join the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and the Chicago Park District for a day of games, fun, food, music, and inclusive fitness for veterans with disabilities and their families and friends. Events will take place Friday, October 9, at Northerly Island in Chicago from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will include handcycling, fishing, kayaking, golf, table games, tennis, bocce ball, quad rugby, sailing, rowing, and wheelchair sports such as football, basketball, and softball, as well as feature other adaptive sporting equipment.

Teleconference on Policy Implications for Disability and Rehabilitation Research Quality, National Center for the Dissemination of Disability Research (NCDDR), Thursday, September 17, 2009

The NCDDR will host a (free) teleconference on September 17, 2009, from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. (CST) for NIDRR grantees and other individuals interested in the impacts of current and future federal policy directives upon the quality of disability and rehabilitation research. Panelists will include high-level representatives from federal disability-related agencies and disability organizations.

Space is limited to 35 participants. For those who cannot attend the live teleconference, a recording and transcript will be archived on the NCDDR homepage at www.ncddr.org.

Call for Hosts, Inclusive Playgrounds Awareness Event, Inclusive Fitness Coalition (IFC)

The IFC is calling for advocates, community groups, families, and other related organizations to host awareness events focusing on inclusion at various playgrounds across the world. Plan an event in your community and help spread the word and educate others who may not be aware of the benefits of inclusive design and play. Inform the IFC of your plans and let it help disseminate this information. Participating playgrounds/groups will be submitted for possible inclusion in a series of articles for national magazines, in addition to the IFC website and newsletter.
