NCHPAD Video Corner: Slalom from the National Veterans Wheelchair Games & More

NCHPAD Video Clip of the Month: Slalom from the National Veterans Wheelchair Games
I personally thought "slalom" meant skiing. Little did I know that the Slalom competition at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG) is an intricate obstacle course competition that requires great skill and efficiency. In the September 2009 Program Spotlight, we highlighted the 29th Annual NVWG that took place in Spokane, Washington. This month, we continue sharing the exciting sport footage with video and interviews from the Slalom competition.

NCHPAD is continually sharing new video clips for both consumers and professionals on YouTube. To check out our most recent additions (listed below) that can assist fitness professionals with training clients with disabilities or activity limitations, as well as watch some of our staff "Favorites," visit NCPAD's YouTube page at http://www.youtube.com/user/NCPAD. • Manual Muscle Test
    • This video clip shows a fitness professional performing a manual muscle test on a client with cerebral palsy. This test allows the evaluator to assess muscle strengths, weaknesses, and imbalances to better create goals and monitor progress, and may be especially useful when the more common strength-testing protocols (i.e., 1RM) are not appropriate for your client.
  • Assistive Devices
    • This video clip demonstrates how to use various assistive (hand) devices to assist a client in performing certain exercises.
  • Range of Motion Test
    • This clip shows how a trainer can assess a participant's range of motion so that he or she may prescribe appropriate exercise within that individual's limitations and abilities, as well as record gains and monitor progress.
  • Evaluation of a First-Time Client
    • The fitness professional needs to know crucial information about the client before beginning an exercise program. This clip demonstrates the collection of that vital information, such as medical history, current activity level, restrictions, prescriptions, individual goals, and more.

Video Review: Gentle Fitness
Award-winning Gentle Fitness is fun and therapeutic for individuals with a variety of abilities and conditions. With healing stretches, easy-to-follow chair exercises, yoga, self-massage techniques, and therapeutic breathing, the program helps to strengthen core muscles and improve balance and circulation. It also helps relieve fatigue, cramps, stiff joints, musculoskeletal pain, and myofascial pain. Producer and teacher Catherine MacRae, who has multiple sclerosis, blends the ancient wisdom of yoga with state-of-the-art exercise physiology and kinesiology. A student said, "Catherine is so clear and easy-to-follow. She is wonderful!"

For variety and choice, the 90-minute DVD has 6 full short programs for a person to use alone, or to combine together, depending on time and energy. Includes a 20-page booklet: Guide to Exercise. Closed-Captioned. All-region DVD.
