In light of National Cancer Prevention Month, it seems that an appropriate topic for this month's column is to focus on exercise as treatment for cancer patients as well as a form of prevention. According to the American Cancer Society, "cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells." This group of diseases is caused by both external and internal factors and these factors can work individually or collectively to initiate or promote carcinogenesis. Scientific evidence shows that in 2009, about one-third of the 562,340 cancer deaths that were expected to occur due to this disease were related to overweight or obesity, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition.
