Healthy Aging Month

September is Healthy Aging Month. The National Institute on Aging/National Library of Medicine has an excellent website, http://www.ncpad.org/675/2925/2002-09-01, which reviews the benefits of exercise, safety considerations, exercises to try, frequently asked questions, and Medline Plus. The exercises are divided into strength, balance, stretching, and endurance, and include video clips, photos, and animated figures. The Medline Plus link allows users to access current research on exercise for seniors.

Also, see NCPAD's online factsheets (http://www.ncpad.org/content/10/Fun~and~~Leisure) for helpful information on exercising with various health conditions - arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and stroke, recreation or leisure time activities, and resources and accessibility. Sample online monographs (http://www.ncpad.org/content/7/Disability~Condition) include topics on exercise for persons with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
